Full Description: Humayun (AH 937-947 /1530-1540 AD) & (AH 962-963 /1555-1556 AD), Qandahar Mint (off flan), Silver Shahrukhi (Mithqal), Obv: Arabic legend The Kalima Shahada within a circular & four Caliph's name in the margin, Rev: Arabic legend "al sultan-ul azam al khaqan al mukarram, khuld Allahu ta'ala dhatahu wa mulkahu wa sultanahu" in the margin, "zarb Qandahar" off flan at the bottom & within a mehrabi "Muhammad Humayun Badshah Ghazi", 3.85g, 23.77mm, no test mark, some usual flatness, about very fine, Very Rare. Note: Forced to flee Hindustan during the Afghan resurgence led by Sher Shah Suri, Humayun sought refuge with Tahmasp Safavi, the king of Iran. Qandahar, occupied by his rebellious brother Kamran, was conquered by Humayun nominally on behalf of Tahmasp. This conquest provided Humayun with a crucial strategic foothold to initiate his re-conquest of Hindustan. The coin, struck to the local standard exclusive to Qandahar, displays only the first letter "Qaf" on this specimen. |
